Reader's Workshop

In order to maintain many of the reading skills your child has learned over the past few months in reading, I will be presenting some Shared Reading Lessons. Here is a link to my first lesson. Please have your child read along with me. They can watch this video more than once to help build on their use of reading strategies.

Here are some questions we would be asking the kindergartners to think about when they are reading and get to a tricky word.
Does it look right?
(Does the word they are saying match the letters that are on the page)
Does it sound right?
(Is what they are saying sound like regular talking?)
Does it make sense?
(Does what they are saying make sense?)

Reading Strategies
Here are the reading strategies (and their description) that we introduce throughout the kindergarten year.
Eagle Eye
Look at the pictures for clues to help figure out the word.

Stretchy Snake
Stretch out the sounds in the word.

Chunky Monkey
Break the word into smaller chunks.
stand            jumping         flat

Get Ready Gecko
Get your mouth ready to make the first sound!

Skippy Skunk
Skip the word, read to the end of the sentence and then come back to it.
